Capital University / Kenyon

Teaching is a popular career for Kenyon graduates, and the Capital/Kenyon Secondary Certification Partnership combines Kenyon courses with coursework and student-teaching at Capital University to prepare students to qualify for and obtain licensure to teach in public schools.

Partnership Details

The Kenyon/Capital Partnership provides a four-year framework that allows students to graduate with a bachelor's degree from Kenyon while completing requirements to attain an Ohio teaching license and teach in the public school system (Ohio teaching licenses are transferable to other states).

Students who take advantage of the partnership will take a combination of:

  1. required teacher education courses offered in the normal course of study at Kenyon;
  2. pedagogy, methods and experiential courses run through Capital University;
  3. content courses at Kenyon related to the subject(s) the student wishes to teach, usually related to the student's major(s).

Due to the myriad ways it is possible to satisfy these requirements, students should consult with Gordon Loveland, the pre-teaching advisor, as soon as possible in order to begin outlining an individual program. Students can begin coursework as early as their first year, which provides maximum flexibility in completing the requirements for licensure. Students who begin after their sophomore year will have more difficulty completing the requirements before graduation.
