Preamble
We the fraternities, sororities and societies of Kenyon College, hereby call into being these councils to protect, propagate, and govern Greek Life at Kenyon. We commit to uphold the honor, dignity, and integrity of Greek organizations and to promote camaraderie in our organizations, cooperation between our organizations, and unity on campus. These bylaws shall govern the Greek community at Kenyon College. The values Greek Life will uphold are leadership, ritual, service, friendship and scholarship.
Article I: Name
The coordinating government of the fraternities, sororities and societies at Kenyon College shall hereinafter be designated as Fraternity and Sorority Council. Our Societies will be present at both councils. All councils are considered departmental organizations under the Office of Student Engagement.
Article II: Purpose
The purpose of each council shall be to develop and maintain Greek Life at a high standard of accomplishment. We do hereby affirm these objectives as central to the functions and duties of our Greek System:
- A. To advocate for the opinions of the fraternities, sororities, and societies in any matter affecting their shared interests and goals;
- B. To act as the legislative body in matters pertaining to Greek Life, including passing binding resolutions concerning the interests and responsibilities of member organizations;
- C. To act as a liaison to appropriate campus governing bodies regarding concerns of campus policy;
- D. To promote within the fraternities, sororities, and societies a sense of purpose consistent with the educational aims of Kenyon College;
- E. To coordinate and organize social, educational, philanthropic, and other activities that involve or affect organization members as distinct from the general student body;
Article III. Organizational Structure
Section 1: Membership
- A. All social fraternities, sororities, societies, and their individual members, shall hold regular membership in thier respective council.
- B. Any new fraternity, sorority, or society must become a probationary member of Greek Life upon its inception. The fraternity, sorority, or society must petition to thier respective council to become a regular member, in accordance with the bylaws.
Section 2: Executive Board Officers
- A. The Executive Board shall be composed of five members for each council (Fraternity, Sorority, Society): President, Vice President of Operations, Director of Recruitment, Director of Community Development, and Director of Alumni Relations.
- B. Eligibility, elections, responsibilities, and duties of the Executive Board are outlined in the bylaws.
Section 3: Organization Delegates
- A. Each meeting shall be made up of that council's executive board, the administrative advisor, and one representative from each of the recognized fraternities, sororities, and societies.
- B. Responsibilities and duties of the General Session are outlined in the bylaws.
Section 4: Administrative Advisor
The administrative advisor shall be the assigned staff member from the Office of Student Engagement.
Section 5: Meetings
- A. Each council will meet a minimum of eight times each semester.
Section 6: Quorum
To conduct business in all meetings, a quorum of three-fourths of member organizations in good standing with thier respective council must be present.
Section 6: Voting
- A. A quorum of three-fourths of the member organizations in good standing with thier respective council and the College is required for a vote to take place.
- B. Voting procedures and thresholds are as outlined in the bylaws.
Section 7: Finances
- A. All member organizations may be asked to pay yearly dues to thier respective council as a term of membership.
- B. The cost of dues for the member organizations will be determined based on a budget set forth each academic year, as outlined in the bylaws.
Article IV: Recognition
Section 1: On-going Recognition
In order to be an organization in good standing with any of the councils (Fraternity, Sorority, Societies), all organizations must meet the requirements as outlined in the bylaws, as well as the policies and procedures set by the Office of Student Engagement through the Student Organization Handbook.
Section 2: New Organization Recognition
To be recognized, a new group must complete the process and procedures as outlined in the bylaws, as well as the policy and procedure of Student Council and the Office of Student Engagement.
Article V: Recruitment
Member organizations in good standing with the College may participate in membership recruitment. Organizations must adhere to all recruitment policies and procedures as outlined in the bylaws. Potential new members must meet eligibility requirements as outlined in the bylaws.
Article VI: Amendments
In the event that an amendment to this constitution is proposed, delegates should report the amendment to their respective member organizations for opinion. Voting will be conducted at the next meeting following the procedures as outlined in the bylaws. Following an affirmative majority vote of votiing member organizations, the amendment is approved in conjuction with the adminstrative advisor.
Article VII: Bylaws
A bylaw is defined as a secondary rule providing further detail and operational guidance to primary discourse addressed in the Constitution. Bylaws will be voted upon during meetings using the procedures as outlined in the Greek Council Bylaws. Following an affirmative majority vote of member organizations the amendment is approved in conjuction with the adminstrative advisor.
