Community Engaged Research

Biologist Iris Levin forges connections with nearby farmers to study the behavior of birds nesting in local barns.

By David Hoyt

Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies Iris Levin connects with local farmers — landowners who partner with the Philander Chase Conservancy land trust — to engage Kenyon students in studying the hundreds of barn swallows who call the farmers’ barns home. Through a multi-year, hands-on research project, they explore these birds’ social behaviors and build relationships in the community.
