West Quad

The academic heart of Kenyon’s campus

Richard Serra, Pivot, 2021. Weatherproof steel. Five plates: each approximately 60 feet x 10 feet x 3 inches. Collection of The Gund; Purchased with funds provided by Mr. And Mrs. Graham Gund ’63.

The newly developed West Quad is anchored by the state-of-the-art Chalmers Library that serves as a hub for undergraduate research and academic and career advising. It is flanked by Oden Hall, an interdisciplinary academic building for the social sciences, and Lowell House, Kenyon’s home for admissions and financial aid.

Rooted in the center of the West Quad is “Pivot,” a sculpture by acclaimed artist Richard Serra. Created specifically in response to the architecture of the West Quad, “Pivot” is a counterpoint to the architecture of the surrounding buildings and is meant to weather and rust and change through time. Serra's site-specific work served as a point of departure for The Gund's 2022 exhibition, "Sculpture as a Verb."
