Our virtual discussion will explore the cultural contexts within which the Irish landscape has been written and (depending upon participants’ interests) will focus closely on a handful of poems and short stories.

Poet John Montague may claim the “whole of the Irish landscape...is a manuscript that we have lost the skill to read,” but Irish literature and Irish geography have always been inextricably interwoven — from the medieval poem “Caillech Beirre” ("The Hag of Beara”) to twentieth-century texts by the likes of W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, Seamus Heaney and Eavan Boland.
