During Family Weekend, Paula Turner, professor of physics, will discuss active learning experiences in the Physics Department.

"Active learning embodies principles of educational theory drawn from constructivism – the idea that learners construct knowledge bit by bit, incrementally fitting new concepts into their existing frameworks for understanding the world. Many active learning techniques are regularly employed in physics courses at Kenyon — think-pair-share, in-class collaborative problem-solving, project-based learning, and individual research, for example. In this talk, I will highlight some of the most literally “constructivist” active learning experiences in our curriculum — projects in which students engage with course content by building objects ranging from scientific instruments to moving objects to objects designed to move the hearts and minds of those who see them. We’ll finish with a building project of our own, by making liquid nitrogen ice cream for dessert!"

Join us on Friday, Oct. 16, for this special Family Weekend presentation from Professor Paula Turner. Lunch will be available in Hayes 216 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and the presentation will begin in Hayes 211/213 at 12:10 p.m. We hope to see you there!
