Join filmmaker Steve Bognar for a discussion about his partner Julia Reichert's legendary career devoted to the women's movement and working people.
As part of Film 291 "Women in Cinema," students are examining the work and life of the late Academy Award-winning "godmother of the U.S. documentary film movement," Julia Reichert.
Reichert & Bognar built a career that spanned 50 years. They are four-time Oscar nominees, two-time winners of the Primetime Emmy Award, and two-time nominees for the Peabody Award. In 2020, they won a Gotham Award, Independent Film Spirit Award, Producer Guild Award and Director Guild Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement and a BAFTA. Their work has played Sundance, SXSW and Reichert received a major MOMA retrospective in 2019 "Julia Reichert: 50 Years in Film."
Reichert concurrently was a professor emeritus at Wright State University in Ohio where she was the first woman film professor in the history of the university and created the program's first "Women in Film" course.
Reichert & Bognar's decades of filmmaking culminated in winning the Academy Award in 2020 for Best Documentary Feature Film for "AMERICAN FACTORY" that was produced by Barack and Michelle Obama and Netflix.
Reichert was a force of nature who made much of her work while battling cancer, and lost her longtime battle in December 2022. She gave voice to the stories of working people and inspired generations of young women to step behind the camera.
20 seats will be reserved for students enrolled in "Women in Cinema." There will be a brief 10-15 minute Q&A, with "Women in Cinema" student questions taking priority.
