Join professors from the Department of Anthropology, Claire Novotny and Tomás Gallareta Cervera, for a conversation about the unique ways students are studying anthropology at Kenyon.
In the fall semesters of 2023, 2025 and 2026, Claire and Tomás launched excavations on campus with a goal of teaching archaeological methods to students through hands-on experience.
Inspired by a sketch map in George Smythe's 1924 history, "Kenyon College: It's First Century," they began the search for the remains of Bishop Chase's cabin from 1826. During this search, they uncovered the stone foundations of one of the first buildings constructed at the college, a refectory, in addition to the remains of ceramic plates, crockery, smoking pipes, glass bottles, bricks and more.
In this presentation, you'll learn about the inception of the archaeological digs, the hands-on experience of our students, and how the preliminary results paint a picture of life in 19th century Gambier. You'll also hear about an upcoming opportunity for students to travel and expand their research in anthropology beyond the Hill.
