Join the Department of Dance, Drama and Film at the Memorial Theater in Mount Vernon for a dance class and performance featuring a restaging of 1958’s “Missa Brevis” by José Limón. The project, led by Eve Currens '25 and Zoe Weiner '24, brings together a group of students and faculty from Kenyon and The Ohio State University. The event will also include pieces by Kent State, Perennial Movement Group and new work by Wiggin St. Elementary students.

The event is free and open to the public.

Classes and presentations will also take place at the Mount Vernon Public Library (Jan. 31, 4 - 5 p.m.) and The Annex (Feb. 3, 2 - 3:30 p.m.). Related student-led events include presentations at the Ohio Eastern Star Home (Jan. 27), the Mount Vernon Arts Consortium (Feb. 8), a residency at Wiggin St. Elementary (Jan. 16, Feb. 2 and 9), and presentations in Danbury, at Mount Vernon High School and at Mount Vernon Nazarene University (dates to be confirmed).

About 'Missa Brevis'

Limón choreographed “Missa Brevis” in response to the destruction he saw in post-World War II Poland. The dance is about the importance of community — the resilience it can provide in the face of disaster. Professor of Dance Julie Brodie worked with colleagues from Ohio State — Mara Frazier and Valarie Williams — to stage the dance from the Labanotation score, a way of analyzing and recording movement with symbols. Dante Puleio, artistic director at the Limón Company, coached students from both schools, who will be featured in the piece.
