The Studio Art Department is thrilled to host a Mesaros Visiting Artist lecture by clay artist Louis Katz at 1:10 p.m. on April 11 in Horvitz Hall 206.
The son of a harpsichord-making pharmacist, Louis Katz comes from a family involved in the arts. While in high school Louis built a wood burning raku kiln, and started making pots in his basement. He received his B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1981 and an M.F.A. from Montana State in 1986. In 1988 Louis received a Fulbright Research Grant to document traditional Thai pottery. He has been an artist in residence at the New York Experimental Glass Workshop, LH Projects, and the Archie Bray Foundation. He spent a month in Okayama Japan in 2019. He has lectured at the Smithsonian, and he built a flame electronic art at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi from 1994 until 2021. At the University he has served as the chair of art and design and as speaker of the Faculty Senate. He now holds the title of professor emeritus. He has served on the boards of the Texas Clay Art Society and the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. His current project is a large-scale electronic light installation.
Sponsored by the Studio Art Department and Mesaros Visiting Artist Fund.
