The Department of Chemistry welcomes Jeff Lockwood, TS/MS postdoctoral scientist at Eli Lilly and Company for a lecture on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 11:10 a.m. in Tomsich Hall 101.
This seminar offers an organic chemist’s view of how a small molecule or peptide becomes a medicine, drawing on experience in academia and industry. It begins with describing the drug discovery pipeline and the role organic chemists play in that process.
The second part turns to peptide chemistry in the context of the GLP-1 therapeutics now widely used for diabetes and weight loss. Different synthetic approaches will be discussed as well as comparing their benefits.
The final part covers what makes a good manufacturing route: safety, environmental impact, quality controls and practical scale-up challenges. Additionally, key considerations about process chemistry will be discussed.
