Dear Fellow Kenyon Alumni,
It’s hard to believe that it was twenty years ago this August that I arrived at Kenyon as a first-year student. Now, twenty years later, I return to Kenyon as president of the Alumni Council. My time at Kenyon taught me many things. Among them, a sincere appreciation for literature and the written word. As such, a quote from Octavia Butler’s, Parable of the Sower, seems both appropriate and particularly poignant:
I thought somehow that when I left, [they] would still be here. Everyone would still be here, frozen in time just as I left them. But no, that’s fantasy.
-Octavia Butler, Parable of the Sower
Much has changed at the school over the last two decades. Certainly buildings, paths, and people have changed. And yet much remains ever the same. There’s still the same surge of excitement (a thrill of spirit, if you will) each time I drive up the hill onto campus. And though some things may change, the memories that were made here, the experiences had while a student are still here - and will always be with me.
My time at Kenyon was transformative, and shaped much of who I am now and what I do in this world. I’m grateful for all Kenyon has given me: an outstanding liberal arts education, a continued passion for learning, lifelong friendships, and a sense of connection to a global community of 18,000+ alumni. Therefore, I take deep pride in giving back to the institution. There is a real reward in sharing this love of the College with generations of alumni who were on the Hill before and after my time there.
Many things contribute to the greatness of a college. One of the best indicators is the involvement and commitment of its alumni. The commitment of Kenyon's alumni remains a strong and vital factor in the College's continued rise in stature. The Alumni Council provides a formal means for alumni to participate in the affairs of the College. I invited you to take a few minutes to meet the members of the Council and review our Mission Statement. Through this webpage you will also be able to see Council Meeting Minutes, as well as upcoming meeting agendas.
The membership of the Council is a diverse group of committed volunteers. Each member contributes a unique perspective to our work in representing the vital community that is Kenyon. We take great pride in representing you, and do our best to stay in touch with the alumni community. For that reason, we welcome your ideas, concerns or feedback. You can send them to firstname.lastname@example.org. We also invite your nominations for membership on the Council or Board of Trustees.
I encourage you to consider the many ways you can keep Kenyon in your life, and urge you to join Kenyon's online community. It's the easiest way to stay informed about events, people and volunteer activities. Through these web pages you'll find links to your Class Agents, Regional Alumni Associations, Kenyon publications, the Kenyon Career Network, and Kenyon's Facebook page. You can also share your stories and memories of Kenyon online at kenyonstories.blogspot.com.
Thank you for staying connected with Kenyon and each other!
All the best,
James J. Greenwood '02
