Sofía Alpízar Román (she/her/hers) is an international student at Kenyon graduating in the class 2021. She is a student of political science and Latinx studies and will be giving an introductory talk about the social and political development of the environmental movement in Costa Rica from the 1960s to contemporary times.

Through an intersectional perspective, Sofía will examine the mobilization of various environmental organizations, outstanding environmental activists and communities, and domestic and international alliances. The main goal of the talk is to problematize and challenge Costa Rica’s international reputation as a green, democratic and peaceful country.

This talk is sponsored by the Office of Green Initiatives with the generous support of the Edgerton Lectureship Fund.
