Two years of college French with a B average in the language and a good overall academic record are required. The curriculum includes university courses in French language and culture for foreign students, as well as courses in the faculties of the university; the latter can be arranged in the fine arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Students live with families during the orientation period (one month), then move into a student residence hall for the remainder of the year. Several educational trips are required during the year and are included in the program fee.

This small program focuses on the study of French language, life, and culture. At least three semesters of college French or the equivalent are required. Students attend courses at the Université de Grenoble and participate with French students in athletic and other extracurricular activities. Housing is with families.

College of William and Mary.

This exceptional Junior Year in France program is strictly limited to twenty-five to thirty advanced students of French. Students must have taken college-level French at the third-year level or above. This full academic-year program allows students to enroll directly at the Université Paul Valery and at the Université des Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc, Paul Valery's sister university. The program includes a Paris stay, with appropriate accommodations, breakfast, and tours of Paris and Versailles; and a five-week pre-session (six semester credits) in September and early October, which includes a one-month intensive language and civilization program at the Universite Paul Valery. At the universite, program participants may earn up to a possible 30 additional credits in regular year-long courses taught in French in the humanities and the social sciences, as well as courses in the natural sciences at l'Universite des Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc. The academic year concludes around the third week in June, upon completion of all final examinations. A housing coordinator locates and arranges contacts for housing in dormitory rooms, apartments, or single rooms in private homes; and a friendship family coordinator arranges contacts for those students who wish to develop friendships (this does not involve home stays) with families in Montpellier.

At least two years of college-level French with a B average are required for fall and year students, and five semesters of French for spring applicants. Students may follow a combination of courses offered at the IES center and the University of Nantes. The Nantes center offers courses in art history, drama, French language and literature, history, and political science. Year-long students who possess an excellent command of French may take courses at the University of Nantes in almost any field, including chemistry, mathematics, natural sciences, and physics. Advanced instruction in the history of music, music theory, and performance is available through IES at the National School of Music, Dramatic Art, and Dance. Students are housed with French families.

One French course beyond the intermediate level, with a minimum of a B average in French, is required. Completion of intermediate French by the end of the sophomore year is mandatory -- no exceptions. The program includes five weeks of language instruction and text explication at the Institut International d'Études Francaises (IIEF) in Strasbourg (6 units). During the academic year, students are enrolled in courses offered by the IIEF that are designed for foreign students and in courses at the Faculte des Lettres at the university. The curriculum emphasizes French language and literature as well as art, civilization, and history. Students who have had at least two semesters of German can take courses offered in that language, while students with less preparation in German can arrange to have a special intermediate course. Housing is in residence halls, with families, or in apartments.

Davidson College. Equivalent of 2.5 years of college French.

Fall-semester students are fully matriculated into the Institut de Touraine, year students into the university in Tours. Full academic credit may be earned, and official Davidson College transcripts are issued for all work completed. A member of the Davidson faculty serves as resident director. Three weeks in September are devoted to an intensive language course in Paris before classes begin in Tours. Students are housed with families.

A thorough knowledge of French is required. The program includes a six-week orientation and language session (6 credits) at the Institut des Professeurs de Français a L'Étranger in Paris. The academic year is spent at the University of Tours. Students enroll in four courses, each consisting of a regular university course and a related supplementary course: French literature, French art and architecture, economic theory, French history, linguistics, French political institutions, sociological thought, individual study. Students are lodged on the university campus and attend courses both on campus and in university buildings in Tours. This program is relatively inexpensive compared with Paris programs, especially for New Jersey residents.

The program requires two years of college French for fall or year-long enrollment, three years of college French for spring-only enrollment. All courses are taught in French. The program curriculum emphasizes the analysis of literature, film, and other forms of verbal and visual expression, through the use of contemporary critical theory. The interdisciplinary nature of the program allows students to explore the interactions among fields such as literature, aesthetics, and psychoanalysis, and to examine the problems involved in such analyses. The year- and semester-long programs both have mandatory pre-sessions. Students locate their own housing with the help of program staff.

The Center for University Programs Abroad in Paris (CUPA)

One year of advanced college-level French is required. This is a highly-selective program implementing individualized programs of study in all majors, including fine and performing arts. Students have a wide range of academic choices, enrolling in regular classes at most universities in Paris and many specialized institutes and grandes-écoles. A hallmark of the program is the personal attention and support provided to each of the 50 participants. A limited number of in-house courses are offered, but not required, and each semester begins with a mandatory Paris-based orientation program. Two housing options: a homestay with a carefully-selected host family or independent housing.

Enrollment is limited to seventy-five students each semester and thus admission is competitive. Students may follow a combination of courses offered at the IES center and at the University of Paris. Proficiency in French is required for enrollment in university courses, which are available in most fields of study except mathematics and science. Students live with French families or in independent housing.

Courses are available in French language and literature, government, history, international affairs, philosophy, political science, and creative and performing arts.
