In the 12th century, Geoffrey of Monmouth popularized the legend that Tintagel was the birthplace of King Arthur. It was the home of a Celtic monastery in the 6th century, the home of various Earls of Cornwall subsequently, and later was a Norman fort (ruins from a chapel dating from 1145 are still visible).
