Tintern Abbey

Originally a Cistercian abbey from the 13th century, abandoned in 1536 following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, Tintern Abbey was celebrated as a glorious romantic ruin by poets and painters of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, most notably Wordsworth, who here "felt/A presence that disturbs me with the joy/Of elevated thoughts".
