Crime Statistics and Data Collection

The Office of Campus Safety works closely with the Student Affairs Center, as well as with the Office of Residential Life and all of their resident and student employees. These offices work in a collaborative effort to maintain a safe and secure environment by reporting criminal activity to the proper agencies as soon as is practical. The Office of Campus Safety also maintains a close alliance with the Knox County Sheriff's Office, the Mount Vernon Police Department, and the Ohio State Patrol to maintain offense statistics on and around the campus. The following chart presents campus crime statistics.

*The Campus Security Act was amended in 1998. Any marked increase across years or in the revised statistics from previous years can be accounted for by the fact that the geographic boundaries for reporting were greatly expanded in 1998, and reporting of drug, alcohol, and weapons violations has also been broadened to include not only arrests but also disciplinary referrals.

**This category includes all on-campus incidents, including those listed in the category below, "In residential facilities," which includes all residential areas. Therefore, the two categories are not cumulative, but duplicative.

Information received after the deadline may affect the total statistics presented here.
