Afro-Peruvian Groove

The Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet, a cutting-edge Latin jazz outfit, performs on Thursday, March 21, at 8:00 p.m., in Rosse Hall.

The free concert showcases a band that creates a fusion of Afro-Peruvian rhythms and jazz harmonies. The New York Times said the sextet "has brought spark and intelligence to an uncommon strain of Latin jazz." And the online Latin Jazz Network described the band as "one of the most exciting Latin American groups performing today."

Alegria '93 is a composer who plays trumpet. He has performed in more than 400 concerts around the world. He is a native of Peru. Alegria is the associate director of Jazz studies at New York University. The band has recorded five albums.
