Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972

Title IX is designed to insure that no person is discriminated against on the basis of sex in an educational setting. While, in the past, the emphasis in its enactment has been on girls' and women's access to athletics in education, Title IX is intended to be enforced much more broadly. Colleges and universities have a responsibility to address and prevent sexual harassment and violence in all its forms on their campuses.

Title IX at Kenyon

Kenyon takes its responsibilities towards compliance with Title IX seriously. The Director of Equal Opportunity, who also serves as the Title IX Coordinator, works with various other staff on campus to promote a campus free of sexual harassment and violence.

All faculty and staff at Kenyon, with the exception of those who hold confidentiality (such as health care providers), must report incidents of sexual harassment and/or violence to the DEO. Guidance from the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights has made this very clear: "If a school knows or reasonably should know about student-on-student harassment that creates a hostile environment, Title IX requires the school to take immediate action to eliminate the harassment, prevent its recurrence, and address its effects." If a Kenyon faculty or staff member knows or should know of harassment, then the law considers the College to know.

Any student, faculty, or staff member with a question or concern about Title IX compliance at Kenyon is encouraged to speak with the DEO. Alternately, specific issues can be addressed to specific individuals.

• women in athletics: Suzanne Helfant, Head Women's Basketball Coach and Senior Women's Administrator
• sexual harassment (including sexual assault) between students:

  Members of the Housing and Residential Life staff (Alicia Dugas, Assistant Dean of Students; Lindsay Faulstick, Associate Director; Lisa Train, Assistant Director; Andi Kelley, Assistant Director; Scott Gill-Jacobson, Assistant Director); and/or Samantha Hughes, Director, Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities. (Please note that, depending on the circumstances, the DEO is likely to speak with the student(s) involved to make sure they know all their options and know what resources and support are available to them on campus.)
