NPR CEO
Gary E. Knell, president and chief executive officer of National Public Radio (NPR), visits Kenyon on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to discuss the future of public radio.
Knell, a Kenyon parent, will speak in the Higley Hall auditorium. He'll address the radio network's worldwide media operations and new endeavors in social media, music, and programming.
Knell's career in public media spans nearly thirty years. He was the chief executive of the Sesame Street Workshop for twelve years before his move to NPR. While at Sesame Street, Knell expanded the company's international presence, establishing co-productions of the show in Egypt, India, Northern Ireland, and South Africa. He was previously managing director of Manager Media International, a print and multimedia publishing company with offices in Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
Apart from his work in media, he is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and the U.S. National Commission to UNESCO. He has been a guest lecturer at Harvard University, Duke University, and Carnegie Mellon University. Knell has given commencement speeches at the University of California at Los Angeles, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Texas at Austin.
