The SAP Grants (Sustainability Action Program Grant)

SAP Grants are new this fall 2012! Kenyon College will now be giving out $2,000 maximum grant money for specified sustainable projects around campus. Applications are due by October 2012 for the '12-13 academic year.

After the submission of applications, the committee awarded two student grants this fall!

One of the two SAP Grants was awarded to the ECO/PEAS house to create a hoop house. A hoop house is a cheaper and more sustainable version of a greenhouse, used to grow plants during winter months, start crops early, and push the harvesting season later into the fall. The ECO/PEAS house has a garden but it is not utilized by very many students, as the majority of growing season falls on summer break. A hoop house on the same plot of land will allow the ECO/PEAS members to garden year-round, educate other Kenyon students about sustainable and local gardening, and grow food for ECO/PEAS dinners. Construction will take place during the spring semester (2013).

The second SAP Grant was awarded to Jason Kass to provide students with a more environmentaly friendly plastic cup that remains cost competitive with regular plastic cups. The school's recycing facility only recycles plastics #1-5, which means #6 plastic (Solo cups) are thrown into the trash and then landfills. The grant gives students the option to use a plastic cup that is #1 plastic (recyclable on campus) and also is produced by 50% post-consumer content that comes from old water bottles (#1 plastic). The purpose of the grant is to promote student awareness and recognition of where items purchased come from and then where they go. The cups are called Incycle cups and are currently being sold at the Kenyon College Bookstore. More information about the cup can be found at the company's website.
