Orientation Mission Statement

Mission

The mission of the Kenyon College New Student Orientation program is to facilitate the transition of incoming first-year and transfer students to Kenyon through support and development of the mission and goals of the College as well as the Division of Student Affairs. Kenyon's Orientation program introduces incoming students to the academic, community, and social components inherent in a well-rounded liberal arts education by providing engaging programs and activities in which each student can begin to acclimate successfully to his or her new community.

Goals

In fulfillment of this mission, Kenyon's New Student Orientation aims to:

  1. Enable first-year and transfer students to develop meaningful working relationships with faculty, staff, and other students
  2. Introduce students to the various Kenyon academic programs and general college requirements in order to begin to develop a four-year academic plan
  3. Provide students with the necessary information, tools, and resources to be a successful student in the classroom
  4. Create a welcoming campus environment that values diversity and fosters autonomy and respect
  5. Share information that will enable students to make educated choices regarding issues of personal safety, substance abuse, healthy lifestyles, and other relevant issues
  6. Provide a safe environment and appropriate venues for students to meaningfully discuss the community standards, expectations, and challenges of a residential living/learning experience
  7. Present opportunities for students to learn more about co-curricular involvement, both on-campus and in the greater community
  8. Connect new students with Kenyon's rich history and traditions to enable a sense of belonging
  9. Provide families with information and resources regarding the College's philosophy when working with their student and, in turn, become a resource for their student during this time of transition
  10. Continually assess and evaluate New Student Orientation programming in order to adapt and meet the needs of each incoming class.
