Taste of the Real World

Offering a dynamic format of speaker dinners and workshops, participants of the Taste of the Real World program are empowered to transition from Kenyon to a life beyond college in a way that is engaging and meaningful. Taste of the Real World occurs once a month on Fridays in Peirce Pub at 5pm (advanced registration is required). Registration for the 2012-13 Taste of the Real World is has closed.

Friday, September 14: Networking & Wine Tasting

What's the difference between a Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon? A Syrah and a Malbec? Find out with this session while practicing your networking skills on alumni, faculty and staff.

Friday, October 5: Conducting a Job Search

Learn some tips for sharpening your resume and interviewing skills! Whether you're applying for a job or applying to graduate/professional school, creating a resume and understanding how to interview well is of utmost importance. Submit your resume in advance for personalized attention and critiques.

Friday, November 9: Negotiating Salary and Benefits

As you move ahead with your job search, you'll want to be prepared to negotiate salary after receiving a job offer. Learn some tactful ways to ask for more money, as well as how to navigate the benefits and insurance world successfully.

Friday, December 7: Cooking 101

This session will include a cooking demonstration. Once you are out of college, you're in charge of finding three healthy meals for yourself every day! We'll give you an idea of some easy recipes you can keep on hand to make for yourself or when having friends over. You'll also learn how to navigate the grocery store in order to make healthy choices and put together a well-balanced diet.

Friday, January 25: Dinner Etiquette

Many interviews these days include a lunch and/or dinner. Many jobs involve meeting with fellow employees or potential clients over a meal. Attend this etiquette dinner to learn appropriate manners for such a meal.

Friday, February 15: Managing Your Finances

Learn what it means to manage a credit card, savings and checking accounts, pay off student loans, manage investments, create a personal budget, and more.

Friday, March 22: Working With Difficult People

No matter what kind of job or schooling you choose after Kenyon, you are bound to run into people who have a different work style compared to you. Using the MBTI as a tool to understand ourselves and others, you'll learn how to work with difficult people, have tough conversations, and find common ground.

Friday, April 12: Onward and Upward: Life After Kenyon

A panel of alumni and staff will share their experiences with life after college and what they wish they knew when they were seniors heading out on their own for the first time! How do you figure out where to move in a new city? How do you rent an apartment? How do you find a doctor and a dentist? What else do you need to know when moving to a new city? What should you do to ensure that first job is the one you want?
