Proof Adds Up

GAMBIER, Ohio (January 26, 2011)

The Department of Dance and Drama presents Proof on Friday, January 28, and Saturday, January 29, at 8:00 p.m.

Proof, a play by David Auburn, won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 2001. The scene is the Chicago home of Robert, a mathematical genius who has recently died after suffering from mental illness. The play follows Catherine, Robert's daughter, and her relationships with her father; sister, Claire; and Hal, Robert's former student. When Hal discovers the mathematical proof to a theorem mathematicians thought was impossible, Catherine claims it was she, not her father, who wrote the proof. Proof examines the relationship between genius and insanity and considers human relationships and the difficulty of establishing trust and love.

Proof is directed by Will Arbery '11 of Dallas. Eliza Logan '11 of New York City plays Catherine. Kevin Holloway '11 of New Canaan, Conn., plays Hal. Rachel Sachnoff '12 of Lake Bluff, Ill., plays Claire. Reed Stokes '11 of Seattle plays Robert.
