My work

I work closely with operations of the Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Soccer Plus to create annual budgets and forecasts. Our finance team is small (aka: lean); therefore I work with a lot of people from a wide range of departments—accounts payable/accounts receivable, treasury, accounting, legal, marketing, ad sales, production, programming, and digital. The goal is to insure all financial matters are completed in an accurate and timely manner.

Career highlight

The highlight for me at Fox Soccer Channel was being a part of the launch of our second channel, Fox Soccer Plus. I love change. Fox is a very entrepreneurial company in that it acquires new businesses as well as creates new businesses. We were in a position where we could launch a new channel, and Fox took the opportunity to do so. Budgeting and planning for a new business is different from budgeting for an existing company. There are many changing features to a new company, and you must be very adaptive. I am happy that I was part of this.

Key Kenyon experience

The process of completing and passing the senior-year comps in economics was a great experience. I can still remember where I was when I found out that I had passed. The project consisted of a test, two essays in response to two economic problems, and then orally explaining and defending my answers. It was about a two-month process and was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences I have encountered.

How a Kenyon education helped

The Economics Department was instrumental to my growth as a person. I attribute most of this to three professors: Bruce Gensemer, James Keeler, and Will Melick. Before coming to Kenyon, I was very naïve. I had no idea what I wanted to do. Learning economic theory opened my eyes. I discovered how the economy works and how companies operate within it. My interest in business has been growing ever since.

I would also like to mention my basketball coach, Suzanne Helfant. Sports played a big part in my Kenyon experience. She taught me many things, but one I will never forget is staying out of my comfort zone. We can always do more than we think we can. It is up to us to push ourselves to the next level. Because of this, I take on more challenges and usually succeed, even if I had originally questioned myself.

Why Kenyon?

I believe that Kenyon provided a greater learning experience than most non-liberal arts schools. Yes, a student can go to college and learn a specific skill and go into the professional world and apply that skill. But the liberal arts education provides a student with the skills to learn, which are much more marketable in the professional world. Companies are changing rapidly, and if you can adapt and learn quickly, then you are a valued asset. Leaders of companies are most likely not single-skilled professionals. They are generalists who have the ability to execute strategy and to move people. Kenyon's learning environment was a great foundation for this.
