The Maids on the Kenyon Stage Explores Passion and Violence

GAMBIER, Ohio (November 10, 2009)

The Kenyon College Department of Dance and Drama presents Jean Genet's The Maids, translated by Martin Crimp, on Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th at 8 p.m. at Hill Theater, 203 College-Park Street.

The Maids opened in Paris in 1947 and its portrayal of working-class discontent sparked a scandal. The play is focused on sisters Solange and Claire, who are servants in an upper-class Parisian home. On evenings when their mistress is away, they engage in a secret ceremony of revenge. Solange and Claire face despair, jealousy, and love as their vengeful ritual becomes reality. Genet's play, based on a true story, challenges social constructions of gender, class, and sexuality and examines the roots of passion and violence.

The Kenyon production of The Maids features senior Catherine L. Sesler of Erie, Pa., as Solange; senior Rania S. Manganaro of Highland Park, N.J., as Claire; and junior Katherine D. Kremer of Shoreline, Wash., as Madame. The play is directed by senior William P. Cirocco of San Francisco., and sophomore Rebecca A. Kobayashi of Fairfax, Va., is the production stage manager.
