Tragicomedy Memory of Water On Stage at Kenyon
GAMBIER, Ohio (September 21, 2009)The Kenyon College Department of Dance and Drama presents Shelagh Stephenson's tragicomedy The Memory of Water on Oct. 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. at Hill Theater, 203 College-Park Street.
The play is built around three English sisters who are mourning the death of their mother. Teresa is unhappily married to a shopkeeper and feels burdened by family responsibilities. Mary is in a stressful affair with a married physician. And Catherine craves attention, smokes marijuana, and binges on shopping.
Death causes the sisters to confront their demons and memories and come to terms with their lives. The play touches not only on tragedy and loss but also on laughter and was described by reviewer Paul Everest as "a teeter-totter of emotions, bouncing from hilarious hysterics to twisting sorrow and pain."
The Memory of Water cast includes Elisabeth B. Hofmann '10, of Takoma Park, Md., as Teresa; Samantha M. Turner '10, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, as Catherine; and Alexandra L. Wigley '10, of Orono, Minn., as Mary; as well as Kevin J. Holloway '11, of New Canaan, Conn., as Mike; Steven B. Leiser-Mitchell '10, of Amherst, Mass., as Frank; and Robyn R. Stype '12, of Columbus, Ohio, as Vi. The play is directed by Joseph W. Dagger '10, of Glen Ellyn, Ill. Jonathan Meyers '10, of Scarsdale, N.Y., is the production stage manager.
