Camilla Cai specializes in the musicology of Germany and Scandinavia. She is the author of Ole Bull: Norway's Romantic Musician and Cosmopolitan Patriot, as well as several other books, and book chapters, on such musicians as Johannes Brahms, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn, and Clara Schumann.
In 1997-98, Cai was a fellow at the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in Oslo, Norway. During her fellowship, she researched Norwegian-American music, which is the subject of her book in progress. With a special interest in women's music, Cai taught a course at Kenyon on the subject and conducts research on the relationship between gender and music.
