Upperclass Counselor Program

Upperclass Counselors (UCCs) are sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are a vital part of the Orientation experience. Each new student is paired with both a faculty advisor and an upperclass counselor. The primary function of the UCC is to assist faculty advisors and new students by providing first-year students with experience and perspective regarding the advising process, a continuing responsibility throughout the year. The UCC is also expected to serve as a strong leader and positive representative of the College during Orientation, assisting with programs as needed and actively contributing to the Orientation and welcome process.

UCCs are matched with students based on academic and/or personal interests, including information provided on the Personal Data Form section of your New Student Forms. You will receive your UCC match in late July

More info about the UCC program and an application for 2013 can be found by clicking here.

  2. Try and see at least one sports game, even if you aren't really an athlete yourself. If you have friends who are athlete's, they really appreciate the school spirit.
  3. While the weather is nice, grab some bookstore ice-cream and then take a walk around campus with some friends.

Favorite Orientation Memory

My favorite orientation memory is the big cook-out dinner on ransom lawn. I remember sitting down on the steps up to Ascension Hall next to a girl who seemed really nice. We bonded over that fact that we both had Sprint and the same phone. We instantly hit it off, and now we are best friends!

Words of wisdom

Try a class in a subject that you wouldn't normally take, it can be scary, but the end result is amazing. There are so many fantastic courses at Kenyon, all taught my amazing professors. Four years is a long time, but it also goes by so fast and you don't want to graduate having regrets about the courses you "could have" or "should have" taken.

The best part about Orientation for me was the freshmen cookout. I really enjoyed listening to Professor Shutt tell ghost stories. My friends and I wanted to go looking for ghosts afterwards, and apparently a lot of people thought there was supposed to be a ghost tour. When we left for our ghost hunt, we had more than 50 people following us to the graveyard, and when we got there, we had to provide the ghost tour they were expecting ourselves.

Three Things Every Student Should Do While at Kenyon

1) Enroll in a class that seems interesting and challenging. You might just find you enjoy the material so much that you look at other options for your major. If you feel intimidated, you can always switch to pass/fail the first month of the semester.
2) Frequent professor's office hours, even if you think you understand the material presented during class. You'll may learn something new and even have a few laughs.
3) When unsure about anything, use the resources available to you, including your advisor, department chair, library staff, CA and UCC. You'll find that at Kenyon, just about everyone is willing to go out of their way in order to help you succeed.

Words of Wisdom

Someone warned me not to procrastinate when planning and registering for the core courses for my major. She advised that there might be scheduling conflicts or that I might be "closed out" of classes. Although you have options when Also, it is possible that the professor who typically teaches a specific course might be "on leave" or otherwise unavailable for a semester/year. Therefore, plan and schedule your semesters while looking at the bigger picture which will bring you to graduation.

Dinner with my UCC my freshman year. I was so nervous when I was waiting in my dorm room for my UCC to pick me up. When she did, she was incredibly friendly and I was so excited to spend time with her. It was really fun going to Peirce and eating with the other UCClings in my group and then having a tour of campus. It was nice to make a connection with an upperclassman and know that we had someone who was looking out for us.

Words of Wisdom

Don't stress out if you get a B in a class! I hadn't gotten a B in a class since middle school and coming to college and getting a B first semester of freshman year made me contemplate dropping out. I went and talked to a professor and he explained to me that a B by Kenyon's standards is very good and that the introductory courses are the ones you are most likely to get a B in anyways. Since then, I've learned to relax and not put so much pressure on myself. I'm learning to enjoy, learning, which is what Kenyon is all about anyways .

  1. Lounge on Peirce lawn on sunny days

  3. Eat tomato tortellini from the market (only on sundays!)

Words of wisdom

Do what you love! Kenyon is such a special place in that no matter what you are interested in, there will be people supporting you and helping you achieve what it is that you set out for. It's okay if this changes several times throughout your four years, and it's okay if you don't have any experience in a new interest that emerges. Pursue each one, because it could lead you to unexpected and exciting opportunity!

Favorite Orientation Memory

Life on the Hill was probably my favorite Orientation memory because it was a great way for the whole incoming class to come together and learn about what the next four years would be like from current students and professors. It was cool because we were given fun and interesting information that has stuck with me throughout the years.

Favorite Place to Study

My favorite place to study, or I guess, "study," on campus is probably Middle Ground. I definitely get a lot more work done if I'm in the library or really anywhere else, but Middle Ground is definitely my favorite. It's great for conveniently running into friends when you feel like you need a break from already procrastinating. You also always have the option of getting a cookie, fries, cocoa, etc. I justify it because it's the "healthier" alternative to gorging myself on vending machine food. But Middle Ground provides the perfect balance of background noise and bustle and coziness. It might take me double the amount of time to do my reading, but the cookies outweigh any drawbacks. RIP MIDDLE GROUND.

Favorite Orientation Memory

I think my favorite part of orientation was the all-school picnic at the end. After so many days of programming and trying to get situated with basically only other freshman on campus it was nice and reassuring to see almost all of the student body sitting together and hanging out. It made me feel much less like a freshman and much more like just another student.

Words of Wisdom

Get to Peirce Thanksgiving early.

This past year, I was the freshman class representative to Student Council, which meant that I participated in First-Year Council as well. I was also a host for prospective students and served on Social Board for my first semester.

Favorite Orientation Memory

I loved the First-Year sing. I've never felt such a strong sensation of solidarity with my peers as I did when I sang a series of traditional Kenyon tunes before a crowd of rowdy, shouting upperclassmen armed with sticks and other noise makers. It may sound scary but it was actually a lot of fun and a great bonding experience.

Three Things Every Student Should Do While at Kenyon

  1. Go the career development office early! They have been incredibly helpful in my internship searches as well as connecting me to alumni to shadow during breaks (Externship program)
  2. Take advantage of the Gap and BFEC trails. I love biking on these trails when it is nice out. It is a great way to clear my head and to get some exercise. Also, go to the ice cream store not too far off the Gap trail. It is really good!
  3. Take a diverse range of classes your freshman year to determine what topics interest you and to find the subject in which you wish to major.

Words of Wisdom

Take advantage of the Externship program. This program allows you to shadow an alumni who works in the field that interests you. This opportunity allows you to see first hand the kind of work they do, and to give you the opportunity to see if it is a line of work that you would also like to pursue.

Three Things Every Student should Do While at Kenyon

  1. Learn how to budget your time. It can be hard finding time to do work when you are living with your best friends 24/7.

  3. Get creative in Peirce. The food can be redundant, so sometimes you have to make something new to keep things interesting.

What is the best advice you've received while at Kenyon?

One weekend I went on a rock climbing trip in Columbus with the Outdoors Club. One of the girls on the trip who was a phenomenal rock climber told me her secret is that she "does one thing a day that scares her". Even though on that particular day she was referring to trying one of the hardest climbing walls, it can be applied to anything. Since that day I have made it my oath to try and live fearlessly and never get too comfortable in my daily routine by constantly challenging myself.

I sat in the front row of the Second City Comedy show. Right before the show started, a junior girl with a box of cupcakes came up to the front row and asked if she could sit in the open seat next to me and my friend. I jokingly said, "Yeah if we can each get a cupcake" She replied, "Oh of course!" handed us each a frosted cupcake and sat down. I decided that this was good sign about college. On top of that, the Second City show was hilarious and everyone in the front row got high fives from the actors.

    3. Join women's rugby!

    Words of Wisdom

The best advice that I have received at Kenyon was to be a student-NOT a grade. For some reason I thought the grade I received in a class defined or was a representation of myself and what I received out of the class. But I realized that I had went through several years of classes with "A's" only to feel like I got nothing from it but that letter grade. Since I've begin to focus more on the material of the class and what's placed in front of me I think I've grown and learned more in these two years of college than the twelve years I received beforehand.

        Favorite Orientation Memory

Orientation as a whole was an awesome memory to create. Interesting professors, like-minded peers and several events that truly brought us together were some of the highlights. Freshman Sing by far had the most impact on me since it was my entire class standing as one, singing songs we did not know to a crowd that had known them much longer.
