Business Concept Competition

Students write proposals to compete for a $500 grant to further the development of a self-sustaining innovative creation. The funds may be used to create a prototype of an idea, to do market research, or any other activity that will facilitate the generation of a business plan. All students are later encouraged to produce a business plan to compete for the 2012 Burton D. Morgan Entrepreneurship Prize of $5,000.

Programming will be offered on campus in the period leading up to the competition to help students craft and hone their concepts. Students will submit a proposal and offer a 30-second "elevator pitch" that covers the following points:

  • What is your business idea?
  • What customer or market need does your product or service fulfill?
  • Who will buy your product or service?
  • What is innovative about your product or service?
  • How will your product or service make money?
  • What or who is your competition?
  • How would winning this grant help advance your business toward a start-up?
