Classics Faculty

The Department of Classics currently has three tenured or tenure-track faculty: Professor Carolin Hahnemann , Associate Professor Adam Serfass, and Assistant Professor Zoe Kontes. Additionally, Assistant Professor Michael Barich teaches four courses each year. But theirs are not the only voices heard. Visiting Assistant Professor Erika Nesholm joins us full-time in 2012-13. S. Georgia Nugent, Professor and President of the College, often teaches a course with another member of the Department. Professor Emeritus William McCulloh offers a year-long tutorial in Sanskrit. Two more Emeriti round out the full roster of the Department: Robert E. Bennett, a resident of Gambier, and Clifford Weber, now living in Portland, Oregon.

Small classes in the languages foster close ties between students and faculty, and larger classes in classical civilization allow the department to engage a broad range of students in the study of the ancient world. The department has been recognized for the high quality of its teaching: faculty members have received a Whiting Teaching Fellowship, Kenyon's Junior Trustee Award for Teaching Excellence, and the American Philological Association's Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Classics.
