Memorial Service Planned for Caleb Gottinger
A memorial service for Caleb Edward Gottinger, a first-year student at Kenyon who passed away on February 17, will take place on Saturday, April 14, at 2:00 p.m. in the Church of the Holy Spirit. A reception at the home of President S. Georgia Nugent will follow the service.Members of the Class of 2010 will plant a tree in Caleb's honor at 1:00 p.m. in the first-year quad. All members of the campus community are invited to attend the events.
Caleb's family, along with friends and former swim coaches from his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will attend the memorial service. Caleb's father, Eric Gottinger, will speak along with several Kenyon students. The Chamber Singers will provide music, and Donald L. Rogan Professor of Religious Studies Royal Rhodes will read a poem he wrote in Caleb's memory.
Caleb suffered a fatal injury after an accidental fall in Lewis Hall, his campus residence. A member of the swim team, Caleb had arisen early and was in a Lewis bathroom at around 6:15 a.m. when he apparently fainted, fell, and hit his head, fracturing his skull.
