February 17, 2007 A Message from President Nugent to the Kenyon Community

It is with great sadness that I share with you the news that one of our first-year students, Caleb Gottinger, suffered a fatal injury today after an accidental fall early this morning in his dorm. A member of the men's swim team, Caleb had arisen early, apparently fainted in the rest room, and hit his head, fracturing his skull and causing a massive subdural hemorrhage.

He was rapidly assisted by friends and the emergency squad and later transported to Riverside Hospital in Columbus. Tests have shown that this tragedy was an accident; there was no evidence of foul play or of drug or alcohol involvement.

At present, Caleb is being kept on life support to preserve his organs until his five siblings can arrive to say their farewells. Caleb's parents arrived earlier today. The family has decided to donate his organs for the life and welfare of others.

This sudden loss of our own is a devastating one for the Kenyon family. Caleb was a bright, promising student just beginning his career at the College and he will be greatly missed by his teammates, friends, faculty members, and all who knew him. This evening at 9:00 p.m., those who wish to pray for Caleb and his family may join Rev. Karl Stevens at the Church of the Holy Spirit for an open time of prayer. A gathering will also be convened at 11:30 p.m. in Gund Commons to share any further information, to remember Caleb, and so that we may comfort one another. I am returning to campus as quickly as possible from traveling for the College and will join you for that occasion. May we take this time to honor his memory and support each other in this time of loss.

S. Georgia Nugent President
