Marilyn Yarbrough Dissertation/Teaching Fellowship
2010 - 2011
Kenyon College seeks to award the prestigious Marilyn Yarbrough Dissertation and Teaching Fellowship to an extraordinarily promising teacher and engaged scholar who is in the final stages of dissertation work. The one (1) year, non-renewable visiting appointment is intended to begin in the fall semester of 2010 and continue through the spring semester of 2011.Introduction
Kenyon College seeks to award a Marilyn Yarbrough Dissertation and Teaching Fellowship to an individual with outstanding promise as a teacher and scholar. The award, named in honor of the late Kenyon trustee and parent, is a reflection of the College's commitment to diversity and excellence in both teaching and scholarship in the liberal arts. One of the great challenges confronting small liberal arts colleges in the United States today is increasing the presence of members of underrepresented groups among the faculty at such institutions.
This fellowship is designed to increase the presence of members of underrepresented groups (e.g., ethnic minorities; women in fields that attract mostly men, or men in fields that attract mostly women; and persons who are first-generation college attendees) as faculty in the liberal arts environment. Those eligible to apply include individuals who are enrolled in a research-based Ph.D. program; individuals who aspire to a teaching and research career; and persons who have not yet earned a doctoral degree at any time and in any field.
Consistent with its overall mission, Kenyon College takes seriously its responsibilities to the academy to help develop the next generation of teachers and scholars in the liberal arts. If selected, the Fellow is expected to write the dissertation and teach one course each semester, usually in the Fellow's general research area. Like those attending the best liberal arts colleges in the country, Kenyon students hail from every state in the nation as well as many other countries. Class sizes are small, and the students want and expect to be challenged by their courses. In addition, Fellows will offer a college lecture or departmental seminar on her or his dissertation topic at some point during the academic year in residence. For more details about the Marilyn Yarbrough Dissertation Fellowship program including eligibility guidelines, follow the link above to the full description on the Provost's webpage.
