Outside Honors Examiners

TO: Department & Program Chairs
FROM: Paula Turner, Associate Provost
DATE: 2008-2009
SUBJECT: Outside Honors Examiners

Please provide us with a list of outside honors examiners as early as possible - be sure to follow up with later additions. All payment orders, reservations, tickets, etc. will depend on this list, so send it to us early and keep us updated on any changes.

Travel: Coach airfare will be paid or $0.55 for auto mileage. We do not pay for rental cars. Departments order airfare tickets through AAA Travel Agency or from Orbitz.com, and only for those on the list (below) that you have provided beforehand. (Not all situations are the same; if you have a better idea, please review it with Darlene before taking action.)

College Car: One trip from Columbus to Gambier and return. Make arrangements through Melanie Remillard, but only for those on the list (below) that you have provided beforehand. You must inform Melanie that the trip is for an outside honors examiner.

Hotel: The cost of ordinary meals and lodging will be covered for the outside examiner only. We are encouraged to use the Kenyon Inn; if the Kenyon Inn can not accommodate your guest or if you have other ideas, contact Darlene Tedrow for an approved alternative. Keep in mind that you may arrange lodging for those people who appear on your list of outside examiners only; and, as you make the reservation you must specify that the lodging is for an outside honors examiner.

Social Event: For those departments wishing to have a reception, lunch or dinner, we will transfer $50 per examiner into the account you specify below based on the list of examiners you provide beforehand.

Honoraria: All Honors Examiners are required to file a W-9 form with the Kenyon College accounting office before an honorarium check will be issued. Send your payment orders to Darlene Tedrow, Edelstein House. We will pay, to each examiner, $225 for the first student and $25 for each additional student up to a total of five students.

Note: There are no hard and fast rules governing the number of outside examiners.

  • Hire as few as possible for budgetary reasons.
  • Hire as many as necessary so that we are not asking examiners to work too far outside their area of expertise.
  • In some cases, where student projects are on closely related topics, one examiner might be appropriate for several students. In other cases, the student topics may be so unrelated as to require a separate examiner for each.
