Degree Requirements for Chemistry

Planning a major in Chemistry

The minimum requirements for a Chemistry major is 6 units of credit in the department, in the following levels of the curriculum:

Fall semester Spring semester
1st year: introductory chemistry (1.5 units):
__ CHEM 121 or 122 __ CHEM 124 or 125
__ CHEM 123 lab __ CHEM 126 lab
2nd year: organic chemistry (1.0 units):
__ CHEM 231
__ CHEM 233 lab
3rd & 4th years: advanced courses
Five advanced lecture courses (2.5 units):
__ CHEM 335 __ CHEM 343
__ CHEM 341 __ an additional 1.0 unit course from CHEM 232, 336, or 401
Four Advanced Labs (1.0 unit) from among:
__ CHEM 234 __ CHEM 372

__ CHEM 370

__CHEM 371

__ CHEM 373

__ CHEM 374

__ 0.5 units of CHEM 375 may replace one Advanced Lab (0.25 units)

__ CHEM 475 Senior Seminar (0.25 units) __ Senior Exercise

Also,

__ a year of Introductory Physics with lab (1.5 units) is highly recommended.

__ Calculus B (MATH 112) is highly recommended.

Those students planning to do graduate work in chemistry or related areas should take additional advanced courses in chemistry and other sciences and mathematics and partake in research opportunities during the school year and summer.

Can a Chemistry major be completed in 3 years? Yes - with some careful planning.

The minimum 6 units of credit in the department can be completed in 6 semesters:

Fall semester

Spring semester

sophomore year: introductory chemistry (1.5 units):

__ CHEM 121 or 122

__ CHEM 124 or 125

__ CHEM 123 lab

__ CHEM 126 lab

junior year: organic chemistry and core courses (2.25 units):

__ CHEM 231

__ CHEM 232

__ CHEM 233 lab

__ CHEM 234 lab

__ one advanced lecture (CHEM 335, 341, 401) OR one advanced lab (CHEM 371, 372)

__ one advanced lecture (CHEM 336, 343, 401) OR one advanced lab (CHEM 373, 374)

Senior year (2.25 units):

__ three more advanced lectures (CHEM 335, 336, 341, 343, 401) AND

__ two more advanced labs (CHEM 370, 371, 372, 373 or 374)

__ CHEM 475 Senior Seminar (0.25 units)

Senior Exercise
