Nominations sought for teaching awards

The College is seeking nominations for the Trustee Teaching Excellence Awards, presented annually at April's Honors Day Convocation. The awards recognize two members of the Kenyon faculty for exemplary teaching informed by creative scholarship. The Senior Award is for tenured faculty members who have been teaching at Kenyon for at least ten years. The Junior Award is for both tenured and tenure-track faculty members who are in their first ten years at Kenyon. The awards, which carry $5,000 stipends, are intended to promote excellence by providing increased visibility for the College's most talented teacher-scholars.

All faculty members and students are encouraged to submit nominations for the awards. Letters of nomination, which will be reviewed by the president, provost, and associate provosts, need not be lengthy. They should, however, provide relevant detail in the form of anecdotes, data, examples, and testimony about the qualifications and strengths of a nominee. The reviewers will look for evidence of the capacity of a nominee's teaching to make a difference in students' lives.

The president, provost, and associate provosts will choose three finalists from each of the senior and junior faculty pools and forward their recommendations to the Curriculum and Faculty Committee of the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees will make its final choice in February.

Nominations should be submitted no later than Friday, December 2, 2005, to the Office of the Provost, Ransom Hall. For further information about past winners and for a list of faculty divided into the junior/senior categories for the 2005-06 awards, please visit the provost's Web site at http://www.kenyon.edu/x11992.xml.

Yes, you can catch the world's ear

Are you bringing a speaker to campus? Setting up a symposium or a social event? One of the best ways to publicize your event is Kenyon's online calendar. And it's easy to submit calendar items yourself electronically, once you set up an account.

Although server problems interfered with calendar operations earlier this month, the online calendar is back up and running. Go to http://calendar.kenyon.edu. (A link to the calendar is located at the very top of each page on the College's Web site.) There you can peruse the listings. Or, if you want to list an event, you can click on the "Submit" tab. If you haven't already established your account, click on "Create New Account" and follow the directions, using your regular Kenyon username and password when prompted.

If you have questions about using the calendar, contact Patty Burns at
burnsp@kenyon.edu or Rebecca Mazur at mazurr@kenyon.edu.

New giving society yields handsome results

One of the many success stories in annual giving this past year was the launching of the President's Society, created to recognize donors contributing a gift of $50,000 or more to the Kenyon Fund or the Kenyon Parents Fund. The idea for the new society was inspired by a parent who made a gift of $50,000 in 2003-04. Five alumni donors joined the society in 2004-05, a remarkable number for a fledgling initiative.

Donors at the President's Society level have the opportunity to designate their gifts to name a one-year current operating scholarship. A $50,000 contribution is equivalent to the income generated by $1 million in endowment. "It is an important time to initiate this new level of giving to Kenyon's annual funds and to raise the sights for annual fund giving," says Mary Kay Karzas '75, director of annual giving.

Both the Kenyon Fund and the Kenyon Parents Fund set new records in 2004-05. There are now a total of nine giving societies available for donors, starting with the Kenyon Society, which recognizes gifts between $100 and $249.
