Preparing for a Sabbatical
Proposals - Supplement Requests
All faculty members planning a sabbatical leave are required to submit an application cover form (.pdf) (Word) which includes a request to the provost for a sabbatical supplement. Here is a list of instructions and dates that you will need to remember:
- A meeting to discuss your sabbatical plan with Provost Nayef Samhat and with your department chair is recommended. Scheduling these appointments before or after the submission of your proposal is acceptable, although before the start of classes is encouraged if scheduling permits. Please contact Beth Frey at x.5119 to set up a meeting time.
- Complete the application cover sheet (.pdf) (Word) which includes a request for supplement if necessary, and attach a research plan. The research plan should include as much information as possible about your planned sabbatical leave (the subject, where you plan to go, what you plan to do, and why, etc.). One to two pages is sufficient. The research plan is expected even if you are not requesting a supplement. The deadline for the application cover sheet and research plan proposal is September 30th of each year. Please send these sheets to Michelle Foster electronically at fosterm@kenyon.edu.
- All proposals are reviewed by the provost. A list of endorsed sabbatical leaves and supplements will be presented for confirmation at the Board of Trustees meeting in late October.
-
You will be notified of the decision on your sabbatical proposal and sabbatical supplement (if requested) by letter after the yearly October Board meeting. Because the accounting office must wait for review and merit decisions at the yearly April Board meeting, the actual amount of your supplement will not be available until June. The actual supplement amount will be sent to you via e-mail as soon as it is available.
-
All faculty members going on sabbatical leave are reminded and encouraged to investigate and apply for possible outside funding. The combination of half-salary and sabbatical supplement will equal five-sixths of your full salary (for a full-year sabbatical). Faculty are encouraged to contact the Faculty Grants and Fellowships Coordinator, Jami Peelle, at x. 5748, for help in identifying and applying to possible outside funding sources. (This should be done very early on. Many grants and fellowships have summer and early fall due dates.)
-
Upon returning from sabbatical leave, you must submit a report to the provost by October 1st of each year, summarizing the activities undertaken. You are also encouraged to make a public presentation.
For additional information on sabbaticals, please see http://www.kenyon.edu/x18644.xml or supplements http://www.kenyon.edu/x18645.xml. Some dates have been adjusted; those above are correct.
