Poison ivy/oak

Contact with poison ivy/oak can result in irritation or inflammation of the skin. The reaction can range from itching and redness to severe discomfort and blistering in the affected areas.

Symptoms

  1. Red, raised rash with or without blisters.
  2. Itching, sometimes severe.

Self-Treatment

  1. Benadryl 25 mg. - 1-2 capsules every 4-6 hours for itching.
  2. Caladryl or calamine or aveeno lotion.
  3. Cool bath/compresses, avoid very warm showers/baths.
  4. Apply 1% Hydrocortisone cream sparingly to the affected areas.

Health Service Visit Recommended If:

  1. Failure to respond to self-treatment.
  2. Eye or mucous membrane involvement.
