Self-Treatment - Sprains and Strains

(RICE=Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)

  1. Rest the injured extremity or injured part of the body.
  2. Ice packs or cold compresses should be applied for several hours. Prevent freezing of skin by placing cloth between ice pack and injured area. Apply ice no longer than 20 minutes every 1-2 hours.
  3. Compression and comfort are obtained by use of an ace wrap.
  4. Elevate injured area to reduce swelling. Elevation above the level of the heart is most effective.
  5. Tylenol (acetaminophen), 2 tablets every 4 hours or Advil/Motrin (ibuprofen),* 200 mg., 1-2 tablet every 6-8 hours for pain relief.
  6. Obtain crutches from Health Service if necessary.

*Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen are all anti-inflammatory medications which will help to decrease the swelling in the injured area. Aspirin is also an anti-inflammatory drug and if available, may be used as well.

Health Service Visit Recommended If:

  1. Injured area assumes an unusual angle; however, the distortion may be due to swelling.
  2. Severe pain or swelling persists for longer than 24 hours.
  3. Further evaluation is necessary for safe athletic competition.
  4. Ankle injury requires an "air cast" for better mobility.
