Bee stings and insect bites
Stings and bites may cause a reaction from the toxic effects of the infected venom.
Symptoms
- Stinger may be present at bite site.
- There may be swelling and/or redness at bite site.
- Minimal initial discomfort of burning or itching may persist for 24-48 hours.
Self-Treatment
- Remove stinger by scraping with your fingernail. Do not use tweezers.
- Apply a baking soda and water paste to decrease inflammation.
- Apply ice to site, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, then repeat. After 48 hours, you may apply heat instead of ice for 20 minutes at a time.
- Keep area elevated.
- Take Benadryl (Diphenhydramine), 25 mg., 1 - 2 capsules every 4 hours as needed. Benadryl is an antihistamine and will reduce redness, swelling and itching, but also cause drowsiness.
Health Service Visit Recommended If:
- Previous history of severe allergic reaction.
- Respiratory problems - shortness of breath or wheezing.
- Develop welts or hives covering body.
- Facial or neck swelling develops.
