Headache/tension

A headache is head pain. Muscular tension from stress accounts for 80% of all headaches.

Self-Treatment

  1. Tylenol (acetaminophen), 2 tablets every 4-6 hours or Advil/Motrin (ibuprofen) 2 tablets every 6-8 hours. Aspirin can be used as well, 2 tablets every 4 hours.
  2. A warm compress to back of neck. Use ice if prone to migraine headaches.
  3. Take a break, relax, get some fresh air.
  4. Gentle massage of neck and shoulder muscles.*

Health Service Visit Recommended If:

  1. Any headache that arrives with lightning speed and severity.
  2. Headache accompanied by:
    1. vision problems
    2. mental confusion
    3. stiff neck and fever
    4. pain in any eye, ear or one side of head

*If you are prone to tension-type headaches, also referred to as muscle-contraction headaches, please come to the Health Service to be seen. Referral to Rehabilitation Therapy can be a "preventive" step.
