Yeast infection

A yeast infection of the vagina is an inflammation or infection caused by a common skin fungus, Candida.

Symptoms

  1. Vaginal itching and burning.
  2. White cottage cheese-appearing vaginal discharge.
  3. Redness of external genitalia.

Self-Treatment

  1. Although over-the-counter medication is available, it is the recommendation of the college physician to seek medical care at the Health Service. There are many causes of vaginitis, one of them being yeast; however, sexually transmitted diseases may have similar symptoms.

Preventive Measures

  1. Avoid tight jeans, wet bathing suits and nylon panties.
  2. Cut down on sweets, milk products and artificial sweeteners; however, yogurt is recommended.
  3. Avoid intercourse until symptoms are resolved.
  4. Recommend not leaving tampons in longer than 8 hours.
  5. Dry genital area thoroughly after showering, bathing or swimming.
  6. Good personal hygiene following intercourse and also urination and bowel movements. Clean front to back, vagina to anus.
  7. Avoid douching.

Health Service Visit Recommended If:

  1. Symptoms occur and you have never been diagnosed with a yeast infection.
  2. Symptoms persist following antifungal therapy.
