Hayes joins Kenyon as year-long ACE Fellow
Tom Hayes, a faculty member and administrator at Xavier University in Cincinnati, will spend the 2004-05 academic year at Kenyon in a program sponsored by the American Council on Education (ACE) for aspiring college and university leaders. Hayes, who arrived at the College in mid-August, will occupy an office in Edelstein House.
"We're very pleased to have Tom Hayes joining us for this academic year," says President S. Georgia Nugent. "I'm proud to have Kenyon participating in the ACE Fellows Program, which makes an important contribution to higher education.
"Professor Hayes brings to the College very interesting experience and skills that can directly benefit a number of our offices," Nugent adds. "At the same time he has goals for learning during his fellowship that match well with activities we have under way at Kenyon. We believe the fellowship year will benefit both parties, just as the American Council on Education intends for this program to do."
The ACE Fellows Program, now in its fortieth year, allows faculty members and administrators with leadership experience and potential the opportunity to work with a mentoring team at a host institution. The fellows gather three times during their fellowship year for seminars and progress reports.
Hayes joined the marketing department at Xavier's Williams College of Business in 1976, rising to full professor in 1988 and serving as department chair from September 1988 through May 2000. From January 1992 through July 1995, he was Xavier's director of institutional advancement. "My goals for the year are to learn as much as I can and to contribute as much as I can," says Hayes. "Being an ACE Fellow allows me to prepare for a position in upper administration, by getting an inside look at strategic issues and the development and business sides of higher education. I'll be like a sponge, absorbing as much as possible."
Hayes will work closely with Nugent, who will serve as his lead mentor. Because of his expertise in marketing, he also will work closely with Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Jennifer Britz, Acting Vice President for College Relations Sarah Kahrl, and their staffs. Among other assignments, Hayes will serve with Kahrl as liaison to this year's forty-fifth reunion of the Class of 1960.
A native of Ohio, Hayes is a 1975 psychology graduate of Xavier University, from which he also holds an M.B.A. At the University of Cincinnati, he earned a second M.B.A. and a Ph.D. in marketing.
