Composer Serra Hwang to perform at Kenyon College
GAMBIER, Ohio (September 1, 2004) Composer and ethnomusicologist Serra Hwang will present a lecture and performance entitled "Rhythm, Rapture, Rapprochement: Folk Korean Drumming and the Bridging of the Contemporary Music Audience Divide" on Thursday, September 16, at 7:00 p.m. in Brandi Recital in Kenyon College's Storer Hall.Hwang will explore her experience as a Korean-born, American-trained composer. The event will include performances of Hwang's work by Nathan Hesselink on Korean drum, Gregory Hesselink on cello, and Michael Seth Orland on piano.
A visiting assistant professor of music theory and composition at Illinois Wesleyan University, Hwang was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. She moved to the United States at the age of eighteen and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She holds advanced degrees in composition from the University of Michigan.
