Habitat affiliates work locally in communities around the world to select and support homeowners, organize volunteers, and coordinate house building. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat has built more than 300,000 homes worldwide, providing shelter for more than 1 million people in nearly 90 countries. Habitat for Humanity of Knox County is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. We work in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - 'sweat equity' - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving fund that is used to build more houses.

We are a student-run organization that is here to help other students with any informal emotional, mental, and other psychological needs. Students can talk to us via AIM and we listen to whatever they have to say. We are not officially trained, that is, we are not therapists or counselors, but we can definitely refer students to the various resources that may be of use to them. We are affiliated with the counseling center and students should feel free to contact us if they feel that they do not necessarily need to make an appointment at the counseling center but would like someone to talk to.

The title of OhioACTION alludes to "Ohio Taking Action". We plan to partake in relief work in various areas of the country (specifically Midwest and Gulf Coast), building off of our extensive history in New Orleans. Although we have been mostly reactive in the past, we will include a proactive approach.

The purpose of "Students Against Homelessness" is to help in homeless shelters and to assist the homeless in finding employment, help to address any medical issues and work towards a long-term housing plan. Raising awareness for homelessness in Knox County is a top priority since Knox County has "75 to 125 women, men and children who are without a permanent and safe place to sleep" according to the Mount Vernon News (2008).
