Research Equipment

The department maintains a variety of professional-quality equipment to aid your primary research. Additional equipment is available through Kenyon's audiovisual department, located on the first floor of the Olin Library. Ask any member of the department faculty or the office manager if you would like to borrow equipment. Faculty can advise you as to the specific piece of equipment that will best suit your needs.

We have numerous types of tape recorders and microphones to suit a wide variety of purposes. Some recorders fit into the palm of your hand and are quite unobtrusive in an interview setting. Other, somewhat larger machines offer high-quality recording suitable for radio broadcast or other professional productions. A number of machines also allow you to record directly from the telephone. Our microphones can enable you to record a single individual or a group in diverse settings. See Howard Sacks for specific information on audio equipment selection.

These machines help you transcribe audio tapes, an essential task in research involving interviews. Transcription machines include a number of features that make transcription easier--a pause peddle, variable speed control, and various tone controls to make voices more audible. In short, using these machines save you time in what can be a laborious transcription process.
