Departmental Awards

This award honors the memory of Jane Addams (1860-1935), founder of the Hull House in Chicago, Illinois and the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. During her lifetime, Addams was a member of the NAACP, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and the first vice-president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association among many other pursuits emphasizing public service. This award will be presented to Sociology students who exhibit the most enthusiasm, creativity and commitment to the discipline of Sociology.

The Scientific Research Society (founded 1886). Membership in the society of the Sigma XI, an international scientific honorary is based on achievement in science-related coursework and future promise in conducting scientific research. Nominations limited to senior majors.

Honoring the distinguished Prime Minister of Sweden (1969-76; 1982-86) and Kenyon graduate ('48; H '70). Presented to department majors who have demonstrated consistently excellent academic achievement and integration in both anthropology and sociology.

This award honors the distinguished American sociologist George Herbert Mead (1863-1931). Mead is an important figure in 20th century sociological theory as a prolific scholar of philosophy, sociology, and psychology. During his lifetime Mead published many scholarly articles and reviews and several texts were published posthumously from his notes and unpublished manuscripts by his students. This award is presented to sociology majors who demonstrate innovation in theory or methodology or consistently display other qualities of academic excellence as student scholars.
