Required Fees and Expenses
Off-Campus Study Fee
Every student who participates in an OCS program, whether for one semester or the academic year, is charged an OCS fee, which is payable to Kenyon. This fee covers the costs of keeping students enrolled at the College and will be billed by Kenyon. It is not for the Center for Global Engagement and should not be sent there or made payable to OCS. The current fee is $1800 and applies to both semester and year programs. The OCS fee does not apply to students who participate in the Kenyon-Exeter Program, the Kenyon-Honduras Program, or the Kenyon-Rome Program. This fee is subject to change in any given year as the new budget is ratified by the Board of Trustees.
Insurance
ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO BE ADEQUATELY COVERED BY AN INSURANCE POLICY WHILE PARTICIPATING IN ALL OFF-CAMPUS STUDY PROGRAMS. Kenyon's medical insurance plan will cover students when they participate in off-campus study programs whether in a program in the U.S. or abroad. This coverage is described in the Student Health and Counseling brochure. The brochure includes a description of both Part I and Part II of the optional student health insurance plan. (Students must enroll in Part I to be eligible for Part II.)
If students already have alternative medical coverage and elect not to take Kenyon College's insurance, the waiver card must be completed and returned to the accounting office. The charge for insurance will not be removed from a student's bill unless the waiver card is received. Each student must verify that any alternative coverage chosen will remain valid while off campus.
Students participating in the Kenyon-Exeter, Kenyon-Honduras, and Kenyon-Rome programs are also REQUIRED to be covered by an insurance plan. As with students on all other OCS programs, students on Kenyon programs have the option of using either Kenyon's complete insurance plan or an alternative plan. If the choice is the latter, the waiver card must be completed, signed, and returned to the accounting office.
It is not possible for Kenyon to predict world events or assure that a study abroad experience is entirely risk-free. Rarely, but occasionally in the past, emergencies (dangerous conflicts, natural disasters, etc.) have resulted in alteration or cancellation of an OCS program for which a student has been approved. All financial arrangements in such situations are the responsibility of the student under the guidelines of the foreign program or university.
