The Office for Civil Rights provides a Fall 2022 campus update on Title IX regulations, an Accessibility Working Group, upcoming programs and more.

July 1, 2021

In an email to the campus community, Kenyon announced that the 2021-22 Civil Rights Policy: Discrimination, Harassment, and Sexual Misconduct has been posted to the College's website and is effective beginning today. The new policy combines the Sexual Misconduct and Harassment Policy and the Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment Policy. The Office for Civil Rights worked with faculty, Student Council, Staff Council and Campus Senate to develop the combined policy. Kenyon has also revised our Notice of Non-Discrimination and it has been posted to the College's website and is effective beginning July 1 as well.

Department of Education issues new Title IX regulations In a email to the campus community, Civil Rights/Title IX Coordinator Samantha Hughes shared that the Department of Education has issued new federal regulations regarding the enforcement of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and mandated institutional compliance by Aug. 14, 2020.

Annual Security and Fire Safety Report Kenyon College has posted and is publicly sharing 2016 crime statistics and safety-related policies and procedures as required by the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

The Clery Act, passed in 1990, requires colleges and universities that receive federal funds to share calendar-year information regarding campus crime and efforts to improve campus safety, including information about emergency notification, the crime-reporting process and support programs for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.

Staff and Faculty Campus Climate and Sexual Assault Survey Results In October 2016, Kenyon faculty and staff members were invited to participate in an anonymous survey regarding the campus climate and sexual assault. Of the 767 employees invited to participate, 359 completed the survey for a 46.8 percent response rate. The intention of the survey was to better understand faculty and staff perceptions of Kenyon’s climate concerning unwanted sexual contact and sexual misconduct, how Kenyon addresses and responds to sexual assault, and whether and how often employees have experienced sexual misconduct and relationship violence while working. View the results of the survey (PDF).

Response to Rescinded Transgender DCL On Feb. 22, 2017 the Trump administration rescinded the May 13, 2016 Dear Colleague Letter that outlined specific guidance related to transgender students at schools and colleges receiving federal funding. While many of us consider this decision to be a significant setback for LGBTQ+ rights, we are writing to affirm that Kenyon will continue to support all members of our campus community.

Title IX External Review Report In April 2016, President Sean Decatur and the Kenyon College Board of Trustees called for an external review of the College’s Title IX and Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Policy, which had been adopted July 1, 2015, and of the College’s practices under the Policy during the academic year ended June 30, 2016.

A respected professional with experience in Title IX/VAWA matters, Rebecca Leitman Veidlinger, was engaged to conduct the review and a committee was appointed to oversee the review and any resulting recommendations. The external review report is now available to download and read in full at kenyon.edu/title-ix/review.

Kenyon notified of investigation by United States Department of Education Kenyon received notice this week that it will undergo a Title IX investigation by the United States Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. Kenyon is cooperating fully with the investigation.
